This exercise is about diversity. Scouts are each given a potato which they give a name and personality before introducing it to the group. Then the potatoes are all placed in a pile, and Scouts are asked to pick their own out. Having gotten to know their potato, Scouts never have trouble recognizing it as an individual and distinguishing it from all the others.
